I just want to thank this organization for helping soldiers out with their back pain. The Army’s illogical attitude about back pain seems to be that every soldier will experience it; thus, why should they treat it? I started feeling an ache in my lower back while I was deployed to Iraq. I am not sure what exactly caused it, but I am sure the bad beds, heavy equipment and poorly equipment helicopter seats (all they need is a little lumbar support, Army) were the culprits. This back pain just got worse and worse throughout the deployment. I was fortunate enough to have access to acupuncture that helped control my pain. By the end of the deployment, I had severe shooting, searing pain down my left leg. I couldn’t walk, stand or sit for more than 15 minutes at a time and it was absolute misery. When I returned home, I was completely blown off by the medical staff. They mismanged my treatment so greatly that I ended up with permanent nerve damage in my left leg and an eventual L5/S1 fusion. I deal with severe pain on a daily basis, although now that I am in the civilian world, I have found better treatment options. I have a permanent spinal cord stimulator that controls the leg pain very well, and a combination of medicine and physical therapy controls my back pain, to some extent.
Thank you for acknowledging the inevitable wear and tear that harms every soldier’s back eventually. I am sure your early treatment leads to much better outcomes to these soldiers. May they know a future of permanently implanted electrical devices and Oxycontin because of you!
